Apam lies on the Atlantic coast of Ghana's Central Region, west of Accra, facing the Gulf of Guinea. From above, the town forms a dense cluster of narrow lanes and closely spaced buildings along the shore, where the beach and canoe landing areas meet the sea. Behind the town, the map opens into coastal scrub, farmland and roads leading inland and along the coast.
Apam is known for Fort Patience, a small fort built by the Dutch in the late seventeenth century on a hill overlooking the town and the sea. Fishing remains central to local life, with canoes launched from the beach. The town belongs to the Gomoa area of the Central Region, a stretch of coast dotted with fishing communities.
