Arrah lies on the level alluvial plain of western Bihar, a few kilometres south of the Ganges and west of the Son River. There are no hills or coastline to shape it. The town grew around its market streets, its railway station and the roads that link it to Patna and Buxar. From above, the pattern is close-set lanes around the old bazaar, with newer colonies spreading into the surrounding fields.
Arrah is the headquarters of Bhojpur district and has a place in the history of 1857. That year a small group of defenders held out in a fortified house during the siege of Arrah, while forces loyal to Kunwar Singh of nearby Jagdishpur surrounded the town. The university named after Kunwar Singh is based here today, and his memory remains central to local identity.
