Buxar stands on the south bank of the Ganges at the western edge of Bihar, where the river marks the boundary with Uttar Pradesh. From above, the broad curve of the river dominates the northern side of the map, with ghats and sandbanks along the water and the town extending south from the bank.
The older lanes cluster close to the river, winding and dense, while the main railway line between Delhi and Howrah runs through the town and sets a straight edge through the newer districts. Beyond, the flat Gangetic plain is divided into farmland threaded by village roads.
Buxar is known in Indian history for the Battle of Buxar in 1764, a turning point in the East India Company's control over Bengal and Bihar. It is also associated with sacred sites along the Ganges. A Buxar map poster sets the town against the wide water that has always defined it.
