Sasarām lies in western Bihar near the Kaimur hills and is the headquarters of Rohtas district. Its map shows a dense old town of narrow lanes, crossed by the Grand Trunk Road, the historic route that has linked the east and northwest of the subcontinent for centuries. Rail lines and newer districts spread across the plain around the older core.
Sasarām was the home of Sher Shah Suri, the sixteenth-century ruler who strengthened the Grand Trunk Road, and his tomb is the town's best-known monument. The red sandstone mausoleum rises from the middle of an artificial lake, and on the map the water forms a large, almost perfect square. An inscription of Emperor Ashoka has also been found on a hill near the town.
