Arua is the main town of the West Nile sub-region in northwestern Uganda, close to the borders with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. It sits on an upland plateau west of the Albert Nile. From above, the town is a cluster of streets around a central core, with roads leading out toward neighbouring towns and border crossings.
Its location has long made Arua a trading hub, with goods and people moving between Uganda and its neighbours. The town has grown steadily. Its map shows a compact centre with a more regular street pattern, surrounded by looser residential areas that blend into the farmland beyond.
