Avilés sits on the central coast of Asturias, at the head of a long, narrow estuary reaching inland from the Bay of Biscay. On a map the ría is the key shape: a winding channel lined with docks and industrial plants. The historic town is gathered near its inner end, and newer neighbourhoods climb the gentle hills around it.
The old town is known for its arcaded streets, among them the long covered walkways of Calle Galiana, and for a cluster of medieval churches and palaces. In the twentieth century Avilés became a centre of Spanish steelmaking, and the port still serves heavy industry. Across the estuary from the centre stands the Centro Niemeyer, designed by Oscar Niemeyer and opened in 2011.
