Bab Ezzouar lies on the eastern side of the Algiers metropolitan area, on flat land between the city and Houari Boumediene Airport. From above, it is clearly a modern district. Large estates of repeated apartment blocks, wide roads and interchanges fill it, with open space left between neighbourhoods, all very different from the steep, tight streets of central Algiers.
The commune is home to the University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene, one of Algeria's main scientific universities, and its campus forms a large, distinct block on the map. In recent years a business district with office towers, hotels and a shopping centre has grown here, and the Algiers tram links the commune with the city.
