Tizi Ouzou is the main city of Kabylie, in northern Algeria, and its map is shaped by relief. Streets climb and curve along ridges and slopes, while the flatter ground of the Sebaou valley lies below to the north. Roads follow contours instead of straight lines, so the drawing shows loops, switchbacks and branching lanes that trace the land underneath.
The name is usually translated as the pass of the broom plant, a reference to its position on a natural route through the hills. The city is home to Mouloud Mammeri University, named after the Kabyle writer and scholar, and to the football club JS Kabylie, one of the most successful in Algerian football. Both are central to local identity.
