Sétif stands at more than a thousand metres on the High Plateaus of eastern Algeria, a wide upland between mountain ranges where winters are cold and summers dry. The countryside is broad and open, given over largely to cereal farming, and the city spreads across it freely, with no major river or coastline to confine the outward growth of its streets.
The site was the Roman town of Sitifis, and remains of its past survive in the city. The modern centre was laid out in the colonial era as a regular grid, with long straight streets and a central focus at Ain Fouara, a fountain topped by a statue of a woman that has become the symbol of the city.
Sétif is also remembered for the events of 8 May 1945, when demonstrations on the day of the Allied victory in Europe were violently suppressed, a turning point on the road to Algerian independence.
