Biskra lies at the northern edge of the Sahara in north-eastern Algeria, just south of the mountain ranges that separate the desert from the high plateaus. On the map the city sits beside the wide, often dry bed of the Oued Biskra, with the grid of the modern town on one side and palm groves spreading around it. Beyond them the land opens into flat desert.
The palm groves of the Ziban region, of which Biskra is the centre, are known for Deglet Nour dates, and the city is often called the Queen of the Ziban. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries it drew European writers and artists, among them André Gide and Henri Matisse, who came for its light and mild winters.

Palm groves
Dense date palm plantations wrap around parts of the city, their irrigated plots forming a fine, irregular texture against the straighter lines of the streets.
Desert edge
South of the city the built-up area and the groves thin out quickly, and the map gives way to open ground, marking the start of the Sahara.
