Few cities have a site as striking as Constantine in northeastern Algeria. The old town stands on a rocky plateau almost entirely surrounded by the gorge of the Rhumel River, a deep, narrow cut that isolates the historic core on three sides. From above, the plateau reads as a tight island of streets with the chasm drawn around it like a moat.
Because of that gorge, Constantine is known as the City of Bridges. The Sidi M'Cid suspension bridge crosses high above the ravine, and the more recent Salah Bey cable-stayed bridge spans the valley on a longer line. The city itself is ancient: as Cirta it was the capital of the Numidian kingdom long before it took the name of the Roman emperor Constantine.
