Médéa sits high in the Tell Atlas, south of Blida and the Mitidja plain, at an altitude of roughly nine hundred metres. The town occupies a plateau surrounded by ridges and valleys, and the map shows it clearly: a compact urban core on the higher ground, with roads curling down the slopes in loops and switchbacks toward the countryside and neighbouring towns.
The approach from the north runs through the Chiffa gorges, a narrow mountain pass long known for its steep walls and its population of Barbary macaques. Under Ottoman rule Médéa was the capital of the Beylik of Titteri, one of the provinces of the Regency of Algiers, and the town has remained an important centre of the region since.
