Babeldaob is the largest island in Palau, a long, somewhat irregular landmass north of Koror. From above it is mostly green: rolling volcanic hills, forest and river valleys that reach the coast through wide mangrove fringes. Bays cut into both the western and eastern coasts, and a broad lagoon enclosed by reefs surrounds much of the island, especially on the west.
The island's main road, the Compact Road, runs in a loop around much of Babeldaob and connects its states and villages. In the south, the international airport takes up a flat stretch of Airai, and a bridge crosses to Koror. On the east coast, the national capital at Ngerulmud in Melekeok stands on a rise above the sea. A Babeldaob map poster shows this sparse, looping network clearly.
Palau moved its capital from Koror to Babeldaob in 2006, and the capitol complex is one of the most unexpected sights in the Pacific. At the island's northern tip, the stone monoliths of Badrulchau stand in rows on a grassy slope. They are among the region's most notable archaeological sites, and their original purpose is still debated.

The bridge between Airai and Koror, at the southern end of the island, is the only road link between Babeldaob and Palau's largest town.
Ngardok Lake
Inland on the east side, this lake is often described as the largest natural freshwater lake in Micronesia. It is a small but notable shape among the forested hills.
