Baeza stands on a ridge in the province of Jaén, above the upper Guadalquivir valley. From above, the historic centre is a close network of narrow streets and small squares, with palaces, churches and the old university built side by side. Outside the town, the landscape is almost all olive groves, whose regular rows give the surroundings a finely textured appearance.
Together with neighbouring Úbeda, Baeza was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 for its Renaissance architecture and urban planning. The poet Antonio Machado taught French here in the early twentieth century, and the town remembers his time in it. On the map, the old centre ends quite sharply where the ridge drops toward the valley.
