Baratang lies between South Andaman and Middle Andaman in India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands. From above it is a mostly forested island, and its edges are cut deeply by tidal creeks lined with mangroves. Narrow straits separate it from its neighbours, so the coastline on a map looks less like a clean edge and more like a web of inlets reaching inland.
The Andaman Trunk Road, the main overland route north from Port Blair, crosses the island. Vehicles reach it by ferry across the creeks, and that road is the clearest line on the map. Small settlements and jetties gather along it, while the rest of the land is largely forest, and part of the area falls within reserves set aside for the Jarawa people.
Baratang is known for two unusual features, limestone caves reached by boat through the mangrove channels and small mud volcanoes that bubble up inland. Neither changes the map's outline much, but they explain why travellers make the trip.
