Car Nicobar is the northernmost of India's Nicobar Islands, set in the Bay of Bengal well to the south of the Andaman group. From above it is a compact, rounded shape with few hills to break the surface, a low coral platform edged by pale beaches and a band of reef. Most of the interior reads as a quiet field of plantation and forest, so the coastline does nearly all the drawing.
The island is home to the Nicobarese, whose villages sit close to the shore, and it hosts an Indian Air Force station. Access for outsiders is restricted, which keeps it one of the least-seen corners of the country. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami struck the island severely, and much of the coastal settlement was rebuilt in the years that followed.
