Great Nicobar is the largest and southernmost of the Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal, part of the Indian union territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. On a map it is an elongated island running roughly north to south, its interior covered by dense tropical rainforest and cut by rivers that drain from central hills toward both coasts.
Most settlement is concentrated around Campbell Bay on the east coast, the main administrative centre, from where a road runs south along the shoreline. At the southern tip lies Indira Point, the southernmost point of India, marked by a lighthouse. The western coast and much of the interior remain roadless, leaving the map dominated by rivers and forest.
The island is a biosphere reserve with two national parks and is home to the Shompen, an indigenous people of the forested interior, as well as Nicobarese communities on the coast.
