Barkam, also written Ma'erkang, is the administrative seat of the Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in northwestern Sichuan. It sits at high altitude in a deep valley on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, and the terrain shapes everything. The town stretches along its river in a thin ribbon, with no room for the broad grids of lowland Chinese cities.
From above you see parallel roads running along the valley floor, bridges joining the two banks and short side streets climbing a little way up the slopes before the mountains take over. Government buildings, schools and housing blocks line up along this corridor. The effect is linear rather than radial: a town you cross from end to end, not one you circle.
