Bayi is the seat of Nyingchi in southeastern Tibet, and from above it follows the lie of the land. The town runs along the Nyang River in a narrow band. Its main roads keep close to the water, and the steep, wooded slopes to either side hold development to the valley floor. The result is a linear plan, much longer than it is wide.
The name means August First, the founding date of the People's Liberation Army, and the town is young by Tibetan standards, largely built in the second half of the twentieth century. It lies well below Lhasa, and its valleys are known for dense forests and a milder climate than most of the plateau. Since 2021 the Lhasa–Nyingchi railway has connected it to the regional capital.
