Bela Bela lies in Limpopo province, South Africa, on the bushveld north of Pretoria. The town was long known as Warmbaths, after the hot springs that are its reason for being. The current name, from the Tswana, refers to the boiling water. From above, the town forms a modest grid along the main road, with resorts and holiday areas around the springs.
The N1 highway passes close to town, and the older main road runs through it, so the map has a clear north–south direction. Beyond the town, the bushveld spreads out as open, lightly wooded land, with game farms and lodges scattered across it. To the northwest, the land rises toward the Waterberg, a range of hills and plateaus.
