Beverley is the county town of the East Riding of Yorkshire, and it has one of the most distinctive plans of any English market town. On a map the medieval core stretches north to south. At one end is Beverley Minster, and at the other is North Bar, a brick gateway that still stands across the road. St Mary's Church and the market places lie between them.
To the west is the Westwood, a large area of open common pasture where cattle still graze and where the racecourse is laid out. On the poster it appears as a broad empty space beside the dense town. To the east, Beverley Beck, a short canalised waterway, connects the town to the River Hull.
