Beypore lies just south of Kozhikode on the Kerala coast, where the Chaliyar River meets the Arabian Sea. On a map the estuary is the dominant shape: a wide river mouth with sandbanks, long breakwaters extending into the sea and a straight coastline running north and south from it.
The town has been a port for centuries and is famous for building the uru, the large traditional wooden vessel made by hand from timber. The shipbuilding yards along the river are its best-known sight. Around them, streets and lanes spread inland through a green landscape of coconut palms and houses.
