Bishops Stortford lies in eastern Hertfordshire, close to the Essex border, on the River Stort. The historic centre sits on rising ground beside the river, where a compact knot of old streets gathers around the market and St Michael's Church. The Stort was made navigable in the eighteenth century, and the Stort Navigation still runs south from the town toward the River Lea, lined by a towpath.
