Blaydon-on-Tyne Map Poster & Print
Blaydon-on-Tyne lies west of Newcastle on the south bank of the River Tyne, in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead. The river is the defining feature of the map. It curves broadly past the town, with bridges and roads crossing north toward Newcastle, and the River Derwent joins it nearby.
The town grew with coal, industry and river trade, and the street pattern shows it. There are rows of terraced housing on the rising ground above the river, a town centre near the water and a spread of later estates on the slopes behind. The Tyne Valley railway line follows the riverbank.
A Blaydon-on-Tyne map poster will be recognised across the North East thanks to the Blaydon Races, the nineteenth-century song by Geordie Ridley that has become Tyneside's unofficial anthem. On the map, the river, the bridges and the climbing terraces form a strong composition.
