Boscoreale lies on the southern slopes of Vesuvius in the province of Naples, a short distance north of Pompeii. The ground rises gently from the Sarno plain toward the volcano, and the town's roads follow that incline. The centre is dense, and houses spread outward along routes that lead uphill toward the mountain and downhill toward the coast.
The name means royal wood and recalls a former hunting ground. In Roman times the area was dotted with country villas, which were buried by the eruption of AD 79. One of them produced the Boscoreale Treasure, a hoard of silverware now in the Louvre. A local antiquarium displays finds from villas in the area.
The volcanic soil suits vines, and these slopes belong to the Vesuvius wine area known for Lacryma Christi. On a Boscoreale map poster, the town's streets fan out across this farmed hillside. The other Vesuvian towns press in on every side, and the empty upper slopes of the volcano rise beyond.
