Boyabat lies inland in Sinop Province, in a wide valley south of the Black Sea coastal mountains, where the Gökırmak flows through fertile farmland. The town sits at the foot of a steep rock crowned by the remains of Boyabat Castle, a fortification whose origins reach back to antiquity. From above, the streets spread out across the valley floor from the base of this outcrop.
Not far from the town, the Kızılırmak, Turkey's longest river, is held back by the Boyabat Dam, forming a long reservoir that winds through the hills.
