Cassino lies in southern Lazio, in the valley of the Liri basin, under the steep slope of Monte Cassino. On the mountain above stands the abbey founded by Saint Benedict in the sixth century, one of the founding places of Western monasticism. The switchback road climbing to it is one of the most distinctive lines on the town's map.
The town below was almost entirely destroyed in the battles of 1944, when the Gustav Line ran through here, and it was rebuilt after the war. That explains its fairly regular modern street pattern on the valley floor. Remains of the Roman town of Casinum, including an amphitheatre, lie on the lower slopes, and the A1 motorway passes nearby.

The rebuilt grid spreads across the plain, the river and railway cross it, and the zigzag of the abbey road rises sharply to one side. The centre was rebuilt after 1944 with a more regular layout than most Italian towns of its age. It gives the lower part of the map an orderly, measured texture.
Roman Casinum
The archaeological area of ancient Casinum, with its amphitheatre, sits on the slope between town and mountain. It adds a quieter layer to the landscape above the modern streets.
