Cesena lies in Romagna where the Apennine foothills meet the plain, on the ancient Via Emilia that runs straight across northern Italy. The Savio River passes on the western side of the historic centre, crossed by an old stone bridge, and the compact medieval core sits at the foot of the Garampo hill, topped by the Rocca Malatestiana.
The city's most celebrated building is the Biblioteca Malatestiana, opened in the fifteenth century under Malatesta Novello and still preserving its original reading room and chained manuscripts. It was the first Italian entry in UNESCO's Memory of the World register. Cesena is also the birthplace of two popes, Pius VI and Pius VII.
