Çeşme sits at the far western end of the peninsula that shares its name, about an hour's drive from İzmir. The Greek island of Chios lies just across the water, close enough to see on a clear day. On a map the town is defined by its coastline: a sheltered harbour, a curving waterfront and a series of coves and points running north and south.
The old centre gathers around the harbour below Çeşme Castle, an Ottoman fortress built in the early sixteenth century. The bay also gave its name to the Battle of Çeşme in 1770, when a Russian fleet destroyed the Ottoman navy here. Behind the waterfront, narrow streets climb gently inland. Newer holiday districts spread along the shore toward Ilıca and Alaçatı.
A Çeşme map poster makes the sea the main subject. The water is left as open space, so every jetty, beach and headland is defined by the edge of the land alone. The street network is dense around the harbour and thins out across the dry hills, giving the poster a strong sense of place at the western edge of Anatolia.

The coastline faces Chios across a narrow stretch of the Aegean. In a wider view the channel becomes part of the composition, a strip of open water between two countries.
Coves and beaches
North and south of town the shore breaks into small bays and sandy beaches. Their irregular outlines contrast with the straight roads that lead inland toward the rest of the peninsula.
