Challans is a market town in the northwest of the Vendée, a short distance inland from the Atlantic coast. On a map, its old centre is a tight cluster of streets meeting at a few central squares. Around it, broader roads form a loose ring, and newer neighbourhoods and business areas extend outward along the main routes.
West of the town, the land changes character. The flat Marais Breton, a marsh area crossed by drainage channels, begins nearby. On a map, straight lines of ditches and scattered farms replace the town's winding streets. Seen from above, this makes the town look like a solid piece set against a thin network of water and fields.
