Charef is a town in Djelfa Province, in the high plateau region of central Algeria. The surroundings are semi-arid steppe that stretches between the Tell Atlas to the north and the Saharan Atlas to the south. On a map, the town is a clearly bounded settlement surrounded by wide, lightly marked land.
Inside that boundary, the street pattern is fairly regular. Residential blocks are arranged along main roads that lead out toward neighbouring towns and the provincial capital, Djelfa.
