Chepén is the capital of the province of the same name in La Libertad, on Peru's arid northern coast. The town sits on the plain of the Jequetepeque valley, and from above you see a firm grid of blocks pressed against the slopes of Cerro Chepén. The hill is a dry, uneven mass on the map, and the town stops where the ground begins to rise. That contrast gives the town its shape.
Water is what makes this landscape work. Irrigation from the Jequetepeque River turns the surrounding desert into a patchwork of fields, and the valley is known for growing rice. Canals and field boundaries fill the area around the town with fine geometric lines. The hill above also has an archaeological past: its summit holds the remains of a fortified settlement that predates the Inca.
