Chios is the main town of the island of the same name in the northeastern Aegean. It sits on the east coast, facing Turkey's Çeşme peninsula across a narrow strait. On a map the harbour is its centre of gravity: a rounded basin enclosed by breakwaters, with the waterfront curving around it and streets rising behind toward the hills.
At the northern end of the harbour stands the Kastro, a fortified medieval quarter whose walls enclose a small maze of lanes that shows clearly in the street pattern. South of the town lies Kampos, an area of stone-walled estates and citrus orchards. Its long walled lanes form a rectilinear pattern quite unlike the dense town centre.
The island is famous for mastic, the aromatic resin produced in the villages of southern Chios, and has long been home to seafaring and shipowning families.
