Chunār lies in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh, on the southern bank of the Ganges between Mirzapur and Varanasi. The town is dominated by Chunar Fort, which stands on a rocky outcrop right at the water's edge. From above, the river makes a broad curve past the fort, and the town spreads inland from it in a web of narrow lanes, markets and older neighbourhoods.
The fort has a long and layered history, held in turn by several rulers and later by the British, and its commanding position over the river made it strategically important for centuries. Chunār is also known for its sandstone. The fine-grained stone quarried in this area was used for the polished pillars erected by the emperor Ashoka in the third century BCE.
