Coesfeld is a town in the Münsterland, in North Rhine-Westphalia, lying on the small Berkel River. Its map centres on a compact old town whose roughly oval outline is still visible in a ring of roads and green space marking the line of former fortifications. Inside that ring, streets converge on the market square and the main churches; outside it, newer districts spread out into flat, farmed countryside.
Coesfeld received town rights in 1197 and later became a member of the Hanseatic League. It is known for the Coesfeld Cross, a medieval forked crucifix kept in St. Lamberti church and still carried in an annual procession. The town was heavily damaged in 1945, and much of the centre was rebuilt afterward along its historic street lines.
