Crotone sits on the Ionian coast of Calabria, where a small promontory holds the old town and the harbour curves out into the sea. From above, the historic centre is a dense tangle of lanes around the castle, while newer districts spread along the shore and inland in more regular blocks. The mouth of the Esaro river lies just north of the centre.
This is the ancient Kroton, one of the major cities of Magna Graecia and the place where Pythagoras founded his school in the sixth century BC. The Castle of Charles V still dominates the old quarter. The Crotone map poster reflects these layers: harbour walls, fortress outlines and the modern seafront drawn together in one frame.
A few kilometres south along the coast, the headland of Capo Colonna is named after the single Doric column that remains of the temple of Hera Lacinia. On a wider map that promontory adds a distinctive point to the coastline. Between the city and the cape the shore runs as a long, clean line against the empty sea.
