Culion occupies the island of the same name in the Calamian group, north of mainland Palawan. The coastline is irregular and deeply indented, with bays, headlands and small offshore islets. The town clusters along the shore, where the land meets a protected stretch of water. Inland, steep wooded terrain leaves room for few roads, so the settled area stays compact and close to the sea.
The island is best known for its past as a leper colony. It was established under American administration in 1906 and for decades was one of the largest in the world. Culion was isolated on purpose, and that isolation shaped the town into a self-contained community with its own church, hospital and institutions. Much of that remains part of the townscape today.
