Cunha sits in the mountains of eastern São Paulo state, between the Paraíba valley and the Atlantic coast of Rio de Janeiro state. From above, the town is a small cluster of streets draped over uneven ground, with roads leaving in several directions and quickly turning into winding lines that follow ridges and valleys through farmland and patches of forest.
For centuries the area lay on a route that carried goods between the interior and the port of Paraty, and the road down the escarpment to the coast remains one of the town's defining connections. Cunha is also widely known for its ceramics: potters here fire their work in large wood-burning kilns, and the craft has become a central part of the town's identity.
