Curuzú Cuatiá lies in the south of Corrientes Province, Argentina, in wide, level cattle country between the Paraná and Uruguay rivers. From above, it shows the classic Spanish colonial plan: a chequerboard of square blocks set around a central plaza. Longer avenues cross the grid, and the town ends sharply where open grassland and ranch land begin.
The town is closely tied to Manuel Belgrano, who laid out its plan in 1810 during his campaign toward Paraguay. For that reason it is often counted among the towns he founded. The Guaraní name is usually translated as referring to a cross drawn or marked on paper, which fits a place defined by such a precise plan. Ranching remains central to the local economy.
