Dej lies in northern Cluj County, in Transylvania, at the point where the Someșul Mic and the Someșul Mare join to form the Someș. From above, the confluence defines the town. Two river lines converge, and the streets gather on the ground between and around them, with hills rising on the valley sides.
Salt has shaped the area's history. The nearby salt mines at Ocna Dej have been worked for a very long time, and the town grew as a trading and administrative centre along the river routes. Its historic core, with a large Gothic Reformed church, sits a little above the water.
