Djougou is the main town of the Donga department in northwest Benin, on the rolling savanna of the Atakora foothills. From above the town looks like a meeting point more than a planned grid. Roads arrive from several directions and join near the centre, and neighbourhoods spread out along them into the surrounding farmland.
The town has long been a trading place, connected by routes that carried goods between the coast and the interior of West Africa. Its markets still draw people from the surrounding villages, and the busiest streets show up as the densest part of the map.
