Domodossola is the main town of the Val d'Ossola in northern Piedmont, near the Swiss border. It sits on a wide stretch of flat valley floor beside the Toce river, with mountains rising steeply on both sides. On a map, the town fills the level ground, and contour-free white space marks the slopes above.
The town is an important rail junction. The Simplon line comes in from Switzerland through the Simplon Tunnel, and the narrow-gauge Centovalli railway winds east toward Locarno. The historic centre, with its arcaded Piazza del Mercato, is a compact knot of old streets near the station.
