Dori is the main town of Burkina Faso's Sahel region, in the dry northeast of the country. From above it is low and loosely built, with wide blocks, open plots and tracks that fade into the surrounding plain. There is no dense core in the European sense. The town spreads outward in a rough grid, with seasonal water and grazing land around its edges.
The town has long served as a meeting point for herders and traders across the Sahel, and its livestock market is central to local life. Fulani pastoral culture shapes the region, and the town's role as a regional administrative seat means roads converge here from surrounding districts. The landscape changes sharply with the seasons, from green after the rains to dry and pale.
