Duncan lies in the Cowichan Valley on the east side of Vancouver Island, between Victoria and Nanaimo. The Cowichan River runs just south of the city on its way to Cowichan Bay, and the Trans-Canada Highway passes directly through it. From above, the compact downtown sits beside the highway, with residential streets and farmland spreading out around it.
Duncan is known as the City of Totems, with a large collection of totem poles displayed around its downtown, many carved by local Indigenous artists. The surrounding valley is known for its farms and vineyards, and the land of the Cowichan Tribes lies close to the city.
