Ekarma is a small volcanic island in the central Kuril chain, the arc of islands stretching between Kamchatka and Hokkaido. On a map its shape is simple and striking, a nearly round outline built around a single volcanic cone. The land rises steeply from the shore to the summit, so contour-like roundness defines the island more than any coastal detail.
The island is uninhabited, and there are no roads, harbours or settlements to break up the outline. What the map shows is the island's form alone and its place among neighbouring volcanic islands scattered along the chain. In these waters the Sea of Okhotsk lies to the west and the Pacific to the east, and the currents between them are known for fog and strong tides.
