El Calafate is a town in Argentina's Santa Cruz province, on the southern shore of Lago Argentino, the country's largest freshwater lake. It is named after the calafate, a thorny shrub with blue berries that grows across Patagonia, and it serves as the main base for visits to Los Glaciares National Park and the Perito Moreno Glacier.
From above, the town is a compact grid along the lakeshore, with a main avenue running parallel to the water and residential streets climbing gently behind it. The shoreline is irregular, with a small bay and the Laguna Nimez wetland reserve at the edge of town.
