Enna stands on a high plateau near the geographic centre of Sicily, at roughly 930 metres, which makes it the highest provincial capital in Italy. Its nickname, the belvedere of Sicily, comes from its views across the interior. On a map the old city is a dense, elongated mass of streets on top of the hill, with switchback roads climbing up from below.
At the eastern end of the plateau stands the Castello di Lombardia, one of the largest medieval castles on the island. Beyond it is the Rocca di Cerere, a rock associated with the ancient cult of Demeter. To the south lies Lake Pergusa, linked in myth to the abduction of Persephone and now circled by a motor racing track.
