Făgăraș lies in southern Transylvania, in Brașov County, close to the Olt river. It gave its name to the surrounding Țara Făgărașului and to the Făgăraș Mountains, the highest range of the Romanian Carpathians, whose ridge runs along the southern horizon. On a map the town sits on the flat valley floor between river and mountains, a compact centre with newer districts around it.
The best-known landmark is the Făgăraș Citadel, a large fortress surrounded by a water-filled moat, which shows up on the map as a distinct square enclosure near the centre.
