Ferreñafe lies on the coastal plain of Lambayeque in northern Peru, a short distance north-east of Chiclayo. From above, the town is a fairly regular grid of blocks centred on a main plaza. Around it, the dry coastal desert has been turned into farmland, divided into fields and crossed by irrigation channels.
The town is known as the land of double faith, a phrase that refers to the coexistence of Catholic devotion and older local traditions. It is also home to the Museo Nacional Sicán, which presents finds from the Sicán culture that flourished in this region before the Inca, including material from the nearby Batán Grande area.
