Formia stretches along the curve of the Gulf of Gaeta, and the map shows it as a long band rather than a round centre. The coastline runs along one side, the streets pack into a narrow strip behind it, and the mountains climb quickly inland, so roads wind in tight switchbacks just a short distance from the harbour.
The old Via Appia passed through Formia on its way from Rome to the south, and the town still sits on that coastal corridor. Roman Formiae was a favoured place for seaside villas, and tradition places Cicero's tomb on its outskirts. Today ferries leave the port for the Pontine islands of Ponza and Ventotene.

The ancient Roman road's route runs through the town parallel to the coast. It remains the main east–west line, and the rest of Formia is drawn along it.

Inland, the ground rises sharply toward the Aurunci mountains. The roads fold into hairpins and terraces, which gives the upper part of the map a finely layered texture.
